In 1944, Joan Eccles and her mother, Agnes Inez Redfern, received Valentine’s Day charms from her stepfather, Augusto William Conti. Conti sent the charms to Eccles and her mother while he was stationed in New Guinea during World War II.
The charms, made from silver coins, each featured a unique inscription. Conti wrote “New Guinea, To My Darling Joan, 1944” on Eccles’s charm and “New Guinea, To My Darling Wife, 1944” on her mother’s.
Eccles still has her charm, but the one sent to her mother was lost in her estate when she died in 1963. Recently, Eccles discovered her late mother’s missing charm online.
Eccles’s daughter, Vicki Fredrickson, told KSL-TV that her mother “likes to look up the value of everything.” One day, Eccles found a charm that looked like the one her mother had on eBay. The charm was made out of silver, just the one her mother received eight decades earlier. It also had the same message on it that her stepfather originally wrote to her mother.
Following the discovery, Eccles shared the news with Fredrickson and her other daughter, Staci Wilson. This prompted the daughters to purchase the charm and give it to Eccles for Mother’s Day.
KSL-TV reported that the seller was located in California. Wilson pointed out that the seller came into possession of the charm at a flea market. The seller was “getting rid of stuff,” Wilson said, and listed the charm on eBay.
To date, the charm has traveled at least from New Guinea to Georgia to California, Wilson noted. It is now in Eccles’s possession and will remain with her and her family moving forward.
